So when a place where we have already conducted "mopping up" operations again ambushes a US column,

Uh.. don't forget that the ambusing force was WIPED OUT without a single US death.

What NEEDS to happen over the next 1/2 year is re-establishing the Iraqi army and police force so they can deal with the counter-insurgency.

If there was any one mistake the US made during Vietnam, it was not forcing the Vietnamese government to take more responsibility for its own defense. This did not occur until Vietnamization began in 1969, at which point the ARVN leadership and S. Vietnamese people finally realized they could no longer depend on the US to defend them.

So you have to ask yourself who these groups are. Are they Islamic militants waging their jihad on Iraqi soil? Or are they Baathist remnants of Saddam's regime (Fedeyeen.. etc)? Either way, it will be incumbent on any new regime to protect itself... And of course, they will receive US training and equipment for this purpose.
