Bush lied about the reasons for going to war in Iraq, the leader of France’s opposition Socialist party charged in an interview due to be published today as Bush arrives for a G8 summit. “Bush lied and that lie is even more unacceptable because it taints the very image of democracy” and it could have “serious consequences,” Francois Hollande said in interview in the Journal du Dimanche. “What value should we put on the commitments of the president of the United States when he has masked facts, hidden truth and invented evidence,” said Hollande. US Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz was quoted in an interview released by Vanity Fair magazine on Wednesday as saying that prior to the Iraq war, “for bureaucratic reasons, we settled on one issue — weapons of mass destruction — because it was the one reason everyone could agree on.” That prompted Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to deny on Thursday that the US invasion of Iraq was falsely justified. “I can assure you that this war was not waged under any false pretext,” Rumsfeld said in a radio interview with Infinity Broadcasting. — AFP
