I picked up a book quite accidentally that turns out to be a novel of the Congo. I ordered about 50 lbs of books from Barnes and Noble (that bargain section of theirs, coupled with free shipping is irresistible) and I ordered one book simply on the name. It's called The Catastrophist- and it turns out it is a novel of the Congo in the 60's. It is exceptionally well written. I thought I would mention it here, since it does seem to fit.

Disgrace by Coetzee was also very, very good. It's a novel of the *new* South Africa. Pretty bleak- but wonderfully written.
