I don't know about you, but I'm not comfortable with that kind of option.

Lugar is definitely floating a "balloon", and probably orchestrated by someone in the administration who is proposing such a solution. But it also could be a signal to Hamas that it risks full US (and hopefully UN) involvement if it doesn't "stand down" and participate in the peace negotiations.

I prefer to let the Israelis handle it. After all, the Palestinians and Israelis have to learn to live (or die) with one another. The US could certainly step in an act as peacemaker and terrorist hunter, but that's a coerced solution that is fraught with future repercussions. And any coerced solution will not have longevity if it requires UN peacekeeping forces to maintain it.

However, if we see the UN step up to the plate and arrange for a widespread peace-keeping effort in the region, involving MORE than just US troops, (so political and military risk is shared) I might concur.

But this is not Iraq, where US forces were involved in a $3 Billion a year containment effort, where US forces were being shot at every day, and we had a series of binding US resolutions to enforce.
