However, if we see the UN step up to the plate and arrange for a widespread peace-keeping effort in the region, involving MORE than just US troops, (so political and military risk is shared) I might concur.

The Israelis would have to be coerced into admitting UN observers. The UN observers in Lebanon and Hebron have a long history of looking the other way while Hizbullah or Hamas uses them as human shields, but complaining bitterly about any Israeli reaction. Then of course there was that incident when Hizbullah kidnapped and killed three IDF soldiers, wearing UN uniforms and right under the noses of the 'peacekeepers', who shot video and then denied its existence to the Israelis. Rumors are that a considerable chunk of change passed hands to arrange for that.
