This strikes me as a solipsism, "the survivors survive", a sort of circular reasoning that pops up in discussions on evolution. I was thinking of what looks like Lamarck sneaking back into evolution, with phrases like 'creatures "adapting" to their environment'. This implies a reaction in the species to the environment. You are correct in saying that all we can do is look at the survivors...and hope there are some useful mutations around as the external world changes the equation.
