The EU is now dangling the threat of adding the political wing of Hamas to exert pressure following a fresh wave of violence that threatens to engulf new Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas before he can assert his authority.

This is interesting. It appears a concerted effort by the leading supporters of both sides, the US and EU, are applying pressure upon Hamas. And the implicit threat is a combined military action to neutralize Hamas military infrastructure.

I was wondering what form any actual intervention by the US, and perhaps the EU, might take. I believe we can be pretty much assured that Israel will not tolerate UN or foreign forces on their territory, so it might wind up that any intervening force is coordinated directly with Abbas.

The Israelis obviously would not like that because any leverage they might possess would evaporate. But I was thinking about it through the morning and wondering about the pros and cons and am starting to wonder if making the PA a UN protectorate and administered entity might be one potential solution.

It would certainly work to dissipate, IMO, the ongoing rhetoric on the Arab street about US support only for Israel.

But the risks are obviously very great as well. However, we might be seeing a consensus that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict HAS TO BE settled, even if on terms imposed by the US and EU.
