IC book-to-bill, capacity rates improve in May

SAN JOSE, Calif. - While the book-to-bill ratio for semiconductor equipment is trending down (see today's story ), the market for ICs is improving in terms of demand and fab-utilization rates, according to VLSI Research Inc.

After stalling in the February-to-March period, the rolling three-month book-to-bill average for ICs continued to improve, hitting 1.02 in May, according to the San Jose-based research firm. The rolling three-month book-to-bill ratio improved to 1.01 in April, from 0.96 in March, according to VLSI Research.

Worldwide bookings were at $10.56 billion and billings were at $10.35 billion in May. Worldwide April bookings were at $10.424 billion and billings were at $10.294 billion, according to VLSI Research.

Capacity utilization rate reached 87.9 percent for May and was above 90 percent for 130-nm and below. Capacity utilization reached 82.4 percent in April and was above 90 percent for 130-nm and below during that month.
