I agree that unions are necessary in professions that are presently underpaid. Teachers were underpaid at one time, but I don't believe that's the case any longer. The particular school I referred to has the highest teacher salaries in the area, yet the taxpayers have average or below average incomes. Only a miniscule number of that school districts residents have retirement medical benefits other than medicare. That's why the teachers demands were considered unreasonable. In fact, sadly, teachers unions today seem to protect the least competent & thereby do an injustice to their students.

As far as teachers salaries, if they would agree to testing in order to sort the wheat from the shaft and in that way improve public education, I would consider increases in salary for the most competent as money well spent.
