jeff, tony, signing up SGI onto the Intel team imo IS a big deal. SGI basically focuses on only one product segment, high-performance workstations and servers. They pride themselves on their proprietary RISC-based processor and Unix operating system. Also, their most recent earnings announcement showed improving market acceptance. The fact that they want to offer an Intel/NT based Workstation (either to remain competitive OR to gain a competitive advantage) shows the inroads Intel and NT are making in this market. This will put severe pressure on SUN, imo, to diversify into Intel/NT based products, that is, of course, if McNealy is willing to swallow his pride and offer an Intel/Microsoft product. The "perception" of this deal, if/when it happens, will be great for Intel.
