pb,

I also notice that pesky patch #811493 has also made it back into my system during the recent 22 upgrades I performed. If I try and remove it, I now get dire warnings that all the other upgrades may not work.

Microsoft released another upgrade to fix the 811493 problems. It should fix the problems without having to uninstall 811493. One of your 22 updates is probably the one that fixes it. Message 18985356

The whole question of whether or not to install updates is a controversial one. There are a few updates that are easy to identify as not applicable to one's own system, but for me, usually reading the update description doesn't answer my question of whether I need this one or not. So as a general rule, I install most of them. So far without incident. Even 811493 had no visible effect on my system.
