Hi Rob,

re: " - what else? "

There are still several hundred million Class5 (end-office) analog subscriber links that are incapable of handling IP. About three years ago there were signs of a migration path to digital and VoIP when both LU and NT announced modifications to their 5ESS and DMS100 switch line cards, respectively. The idea behind this was to support both DSL and VoIP over existing platforms and copper loops, but that has not materialized, at least not in the residential space, yet. I covered some of those developments on the VoIP Thread here in SI:

I don't expect that this strategy is still in the cards due to advances in other access technologies. Once again, and this seems to be a growing trend, progress may very well be made in this area without the help of the Bells. The Bells will likely do it better at some point, but only after the scouts come back with arrows in their backs, or when the technology is near-obsolete.

Much has been printed about how the wife, the mother-in-law and Uncle Henry can't adapt to the new modalities of technology. Well, guess what. They're adapting just fine. Perhaps the answer to your question lies in the approaches that this class of folk decide to do it, because that's where the vendors are pointing their sights ;)
