John, I simply can't imagine any thinking person believing that the US and the coalition would leave Iraq in less than a couple of years. One doesn't just help to rebuild a government in a few months. And I honestly believe that most of the US knew that ahead of the invasion.

My guess is that US troops will be in Iraq for well beyond the end of the decade. It's too critical for the global economy. And I don't foresee any circumstances under which the US will allow an openly anti-American regime to come to power in Iraq. For my money, that's what is called occupation and is clearly an empire. And I also expect that to generate increasing amounts of hostility from the Iraq populace unless (a) everyday life improves dramatically (which, of course, as it does so will lead Iraqis to turn to the issue of owning their own country and its polity) and (b) the US presence is rendered invisible (troops moved out of the main cities, etc.)

Speaking of things....Here's Kerry's new lash out....(next post)

Whoops, didn't read that post. The one thing I've read from Kerry recently (who, incidentally, has been quite quiet) has been very circumspect since he's on record as voting for the invasion. He criticized the unwillingness to negotiate a genuine coalition (mild) and something else, very light matter.
