Nope, Gingrich is an incendiary figure in popular opinion. Others could say what he said and I would agree with your comment. But not Newt.

So, now you're prognosticating for Republicans? -g- A little far from home for you, John, don't you think?

Newt may be a bomb-thrower, but somehow in politics, bomb-throwers always look different when they are your bomb-throwers. Anyway, Newt isn't carrying large ammo now that he's out of power.

I am pretty sure that the striped-pants set weren't popular in red-state country to begin with, and that Newt's remarks certainly didn't cause anyone to rally round State over there. State is the home of the realist school of maintaining current Arab regimes and considering Saudi Arabia our best ally in the Mideast. After 9/11 these policies have been discredited in the eyes of much of the country, for good reason. I would bet that a poll asking if you agreed or disagreed with Newt's remarks would find about 65% agreement - basically the same group who support Bush's handling of Iraq.
