EU leaders warn Iran over nuclear weapons

[Note from pb. I think the "EU" should be more concerned about the chit Britain is dumping into the Irish sea from Sellafield, or whatever the place is called now, it is such a chithole the Government keeps having to change the name of it. It's also a financial disaster, never mind all the stuff that glows in the dark. Apart from that, the Iraq "WMD" makes all this sound very hollow, I suppose Tony Blair is going to kill all the Iranian leaders by choking them to death with his own gall -lol-]

Tony Blair has stepped up pressure on Iran to co-operate fully with nuclear weapons inspectors in the wake of a damning report from the world's nuclear watchdog.

Tehran will be sent a warning from the EU summit in Greece that it must "behave like a responsible member of the international community", say UK officials.

The Prime Minister's spokesman said the message to Tehran was "unequivocal": adhere to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty or risk jeopardising a trade deal with the European Union.

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw will stress the need to put pressure on Iran at a dinner with fellow European foreign ministers this evening.

At the same time, the Prime Minister and other heads of government will focus on what more can be done to help the post-war reconstruction effort in Iraq, as well as getting the Middle East "road map" to peace back on track.

Mr Blair's spokesman said: "What is clear is that there is a very strong message which will have gone from the G8 (in Evian), from this summit, as well as others such as the US, to Iran for the need to comply.

"That message is unequivocal.

"If Iran does not comply with that then the EU trade deal will be in jeopardy."

The Prime Minister's spokesman welcomed a report published today by the International Atomic Energy Agency which called on Iran to stop enriching nuclear fuel and allow more inspections at its nuclear installations.

"All that does is underline the concern that we addressed at the G8 and is being addressed very firmly at this summit," the spokesman said.
