You probably can't speak another language to save your life, right? :-) ?
Was sagen Sie? Ich können Sie nicht verstehen.

Or would you prefer that in Spanish?

What is so strange about THAT?
Beats me. Maybe you will be so kind as to ask that question of the many thousands of persons of Hispanic origins along the US-Mexico border who were born here but never learn English. Of course, their parents don't speak it either.

And pray tell how learning a language makes "national origins irrelevant by the second generation"???
Taht you will have to take up with the French. Apparently they believe otherwise.

Because her ancestors were tortured and used as slaves by your ancestors?
Which were picked up in Africa by your European ancestors and brought to these shores in European ships.

The importation of slaves into the US was illegal after 1808, remember? (Check the US constitution.) The US gov't did not exist until 1789. And the states that made up the United States were not independent until 1783. So it is fair to believe most of those slaves came in European ships.

Feel better now?

Kinda reminds of a little discussion I had with a Swiss kid who was knocking the US about the Vietnam War. I was so unkind as to point out his nation was selling bullets to the Nazis right up until about 5 minutes before the surrender.
