The situation in Iraq is FUBAR now. We need Peacekeepers but cant get them. Instead we're using our troops as cops and as targets. That's how we root out shooters, by using our troops as bait. Like Vietnam Redux.

The American-haters would not likely attack peacekeepers. Bush also should have had a popular government leader to install in Iraq ASAP. SO far the only guy they have is Cheney's boy who everyone knows it a corrupt puppet type.
As for elections, forgettaboutit. The Shiites would win and kick the Bushies out. Some victory huh? Easy to invade, impossible to settle.

Is there any way out of this? See the power of the UN? The Third World respects the UN. It's not a perfect body by any means, but at least it's considered neutral and therefore largely cooperated with. As for Bushies, you either love em or hate em, and over in Iraq there are way too many with guns who hate us. I feel really sorry for our troops over there. And boy dod they wish they could come home.
