"We have been operating on two assumptions: that once the war was over the Iraqis would rapidly move into peaceful mode, and second, that there would be a new political and economic spirit in the country. We discovered neither of these assumptions is true."

Well, duh! Let's see after destroying the Iraqi economy for over a decade, you roll in your foreign troops that worship an ancient enemy religion and kill men, women and children. That'll make'um love us like brothers, right? There're reasons why all this Iraqi animosity was predicted on this thread months prior to the commencement of the war.

Some argue this was the plan all along. That the neo-con plan is to use the current unrest in Iraq and the nearby middle east countries as a springboard for deeper involvement. I have rarely heard a better "prescription for disaster". If Bush wins re-election and the neo-cons succeed in widening the Iraqi conflict into a general Middle East conflict in a misguided vain attempt to remake the Middle East in America’s image, I’ll have to reread Soros’ Armageddon posts.
