ONE VARIABLE AT A TIME

Let me agree with that 100%. There is no way to effectively troubleshoot a problematic update if you have done several at once. I am in the camp of reading thoroughly what each update is and determining whether you need it or not. There is absolutely no reason to download and install a fix or update for some program or process that you don't use. It doesn't take but a few minutes a week to manually check the Windows Update site to see if there is anything you need. Turn automatic updates off!
