Feds charge "Seasliver" makers with fraud

WASHINGTON, June 20 (UPI) -- The Federal Trade Commission and Food and Drug Administration have charged two firms with fraudulent marketing of a dietary supplement called "Seasilver."

The FTC said the Thursday actions against Seasilver USA Inc. and Americaloe Inc. are designed to halt the fraudulent marketing of Seasilver, which was sold as a cure for 650 diseases, including AIDS, diabetes and cancer, and as a method of realizing substantial and permanent weight loss without dieting.

Federal officials said SeaSilver USA previously said it earns $180 million annually from the sale of its product. The product, which sold for $39.95 a bottle, was promoted through national TV and radio infomercials, on the Internet and through e-mail.

The FDA said the actions are the latest in Operation Cure All, an effort by the FTC, the FDA, Health Canada, Canada's Competition Bureau and state attorneys general to crack down on unscrupulous marketers who prey on consumers who suffer from serious illnesses.
