The fact that we use a lot more energy to produce a unit of GDP (even though most of our GDP comes from low energy consumption services, unlike China's) bodes ill for our long term competitiveness versus China.

my point would be that to get beyond a certain level of per capita GDP, you need more per capita energy consumption. at some point you need cars and lorries to replace those bicycles and carts. and then you might even want some paved roads to drive the things on. this type of stuff is obviously part and parcel of the productivity growth that will increase China's per capita income.

certainly the US could be a more efficient user of energy today. but we can (as of this writing) afford not to be. as china becomes bigger economically, it will be harder for us to afford our waste (inefficiency, in your term) and doubly hard for them to afford their growth.
