If the idea of whiteness is that whites don't think of themselves as a "race" where other groups do, then it seems to me that the last thing we need is to imbue the notion of belonging to a race in a whole bunch of previously "ignorant" people. Seems to me what we ought to be promoting is the notion that race is an amorphous and almost entirely irrelevant thing, which, in its essence, it is.
