Orcastraiter. You said...." but this administration was only dealing with Saddam for little more than a year."....

True and the previous administration was dealing with sadam for 7? 8 years and what did it accomplish? clinton fired a few cruise missiles, killed a few innocent people and his so called diplomacy accomplished nothing. sadam thumbed his nose at the world and the world accepted this.

Don't know about you but I believe the civilized countries of the world should not ever negotiate or try diplomacy with terrorists. Terrorists should be eliminated...end of said terrorist...sadam is/was a terrorist.

You said...." A program of intense diplomacy backed by a strong military build up would have been my prefrence. Iraq would have fallen with out a shot if it was done properly.".....

sadam would not have fallen because he had absolute control of all who lived in Iraq and you know this. If he had died of natural causes his two sons were groomed to take over. Diplomacy may work with civilized peoples but IMO it should never ever be used with terrorists especially with muslim terrorists.

And what would be the purpose of the strong military build up? would this be considered diplomacy?

If by some strange twist of fate sadams regime did fall this would likely mean civil war with all the different islam factions killing each other. How many innocent people would be killed in the event of civil war in iraq?
In the event of civil war there would not be any foreign
troops in place to stop any slaughter of innocents.

I think Prez, Bush's way was the only way....but of course the loss of even one coalition soldier is one too many.

Think of just how powerful sadam would have been if another clinton kind of prez. was in power for the next 7 or 8 years. IMO gore would have been a disaster for the world...he would have had sadam and bin hidin sleeping in the Lincoln bedroom within a few months of 9/11....gore/clinton diplomacy at work. :-)
