I have always wondered why someone on his staff didn't check out the proper German for the speech. At least the crowd overlooked it.

I thought about commenting on the "Berliner" connotation. Now that you bring it up here a further explanation: yes, "Berliner" is the name for a kind of donut - but the word is only used by Germans outside Berlin. Within Berlin it is called "Pfannkuchen". So there was no ambiguity for the Berliners when Kennedy said his sentence.
