One of the fundamental misconceptions that led to the establishment of the state of Israel was that only by having their own country would Jews be free to be Jews.

America has many religious communities that exist without interference from the state, other than the same restrictions we all live under. The Amish are required to put reflective triangles on the back of their buggies, but otherwise are more-or-less left to do as they will.

My own family includes Pennsylvania Mennonites who speak German among themselves and have done so since 1745. They live in a valley in Pennsylvania that reminds me of the story of Brigadoon.

Jews have so much power in New York that the laws of the state include provisions for Kosher food. Orthodox Jews have entire communities that are even policed by Orthodox Jews, albeit informally.

America is one place where Jews can be Jews.

I don't want the State of Israel to disappear, and I hope that there will be peace. We are always wishful.

"We are always wishful" was said to me by an Egyptian client who works in the Saudi Embassy, at the close of a conversation about Israel/Palestine. He didn't mean that he wished for Israel to go away. He wished that there would be peace and justice for Muslims.

He's not the first Muslim who has spoken about the favoritism shown to Israel, with great pain. He loves America and can't understand why Americans don't care about the suffering of the Palestinians.

When I say "we are always wishful" I mean that I wish there would be peace and justice for both Israelis and Palestinians.
