I think I like a classification based on the year in which the company first earned (or is projected to earn) say $100m. We'd have to do some work to figure this out for the smaller companies of course. It would have the advantage of more-or-less clustering like-with-like. Once we have the year for each company, we can of course slice and dice the data how we want (e.g., put the 2005-2007 companies in one group etc.). It might also enable some historical analysis - looking at how earnings ramped in some of the existing successful companies.

10-K wizard (for which I have a subscription because it allows good free text search) also has some financial download capabilities. I've never looked at them before, but they may be useful for this.
