Rob, there's no need for koolaid. While it's true that 3G will give greatly increased capacity and that's sufficient incentive to drive service providers to roll it out, demand for pictures will be large. Check out what is already happening in Korea and Japan for an inkling.

There was a photo in The New Zealand Herald a couple of days ago [which I couldn't link to in the on-line version] and it was great. It showed a swarm of people at an airport holding their arms up with cellphones and other cameras to get pictures of somebody famous [I forget who].

It was like one of those Nuremberg rallies with everyone holding their arm up to give a Sieg Heil to the great one. Maybe they were using the camera as a periscope, being the only way to see, but I dare say a lot of it was to take photos. There were a few cameras too and those aren't periscopes.

The old GPRS idea that speed doesn't matter [funny how they call GPRS high speed] is going to die. They tried to claim speed didn't matter when they realized they didn't have speed. But at least it's expensive. Giggle... That's assuming there is bandwidth ... chuckle....

We are about to enter the W-CDMA rush. QUALCOMM has smoothed the way. Give it another year and we'll be gung ho on it. D'ohCoMo seems to be cooking now with it, with lots [relatively] of people finally signing up. It's been a long drawn out process. That'll help QCOM profits.

Now, we just need WiFi hooked onto the W-CDMA and CDMA2000 to get things really humming. Bring on 802.11g. I want to see OFDM in a CDMA2000-powered cyberphone. That'll really sell them.

Flarion has OFDM but they can't compete with WiFi up close and personal in a crowd.
