My point is only that, if you can't persuade them that your belief is the right one, then you must let the differences stand, not "apply" yours to them, as in "put into effect" or "impose."

Generally I would agree with you but not universally. There are some ideas that I think should be imposed, even by force if need be. Or to be more specific, implimentation of certain ideas needs to be opposed. If someone just wants to have an ideas just in their head and not act on them then as far as I am concerned they can think whatever they want. But actions based on those ideas might need to be prevented or opposed.
