Herzl should have taken Uganda when he was offered it

The deal was not for all of Uganda... Just a large tract of nice farmland in the highlands (which later became part of Kenya). Herzl was interested in this deal as a temporary solution, but the Russian Jews insisted upon Palestine. The Zionist movement gained some status out of the experience however because they were negotiating directly with the British government. Good discussion of this episode in "The Lunatic Express", a book about the building of the railroad from Mombasa thru Nairobi to Lake Victoria in British East Africa.

Too bad the the Zionists didn't get a place with a more defensible border... such as Baja California. Hey, just kidding! <g>
