THE DEATH OF GIANNI VERSACE
BY JACKIE SLEVIN
data: Gianni Versace December 2, 1946 6:45 am MET Reggio De Calabria, Italy 38N06 15E39
The newpaper headlines on July 15th sent shock waves aaround the globe: Gianni Versace was shot to death outside his home in Miami, Florida. A world class fashion designer, he dressed the most celebrated people of our time. His styles ran the gamut from the exquisite $30,000 gowns of Princess Di through the cartoon clothing of Elton John. His murder was a senseless tragedy perpretrated by an equally senseless serial killer named Andrew Cuanen, who was found dead on a houseboat in Miami a few days later. Cuanen's death was judged a suicide, as he was only too aware that he was the target of a nation wide manhunt of the FBI. As astrologers, we all know the axiom "As above, so below." Could murder have been foretold from Versace's horoscope? Let's take a look.
Versace was born and raised in Calabra, Italy, so it was only right and fitting that I contact the capo de tutti capi of data collectors, Lois Rodden, for his birth information. Lois supplied the data, but explained that it was unconfirmed, and thus dirty data. It was taken from an Italian magazine, not a birth certificate. Italian data collector Grazia Bordoni was in the process of obtaining confirmation of Versace's birth record as Lois and I spoke, but time did not permit me to wait for Grazia's results, as this article had to meet its deadline. Therefore, Versace's chart may be incorrect. Yet his dirty data time of birth makes his horoscope very close to a solar chart, so onward and downward.
With his Sun and Ascendant in Sagittarius, Versace would be a free-roaming, adventurous type with a desire for truth and expansion. He once said "I think it's the responsibility of a designer to try to break rules and barriers. I'm a little like Marco Polo, going around and mixing cultures."1 Here are the words of a typical archer with his arrow to the mark. He was describing himself astrologically without even knowing it. Then again, maybe he did know it, because as any student of astrology knows, a double Sagittarian is no stranger to knowledge. Neither was Versace. Indeed, his appetite for knowledge was so great that he maintained five libraries and employed a full-time librarian to manage them. As soon as he would arrive at his New York home on 64th street, he would immediately contact colleagues and together they would attend galleries, museums, and art studios. His T-square to the Moon in Pisces in the third house is indicative of someone who internalizes information. Ingrid Sischy, editor of Interview magazine, once remarked "He was more than a collector of art, he was a blotter for art, absorbing it, contemplating it and sometimes bringing the colors or ideas into his consciousness."2 The Moon in the third house also tells of someone who needs their siblings around them, and Versace lived out this symbolism to a T. (Pun intended)! His brother Santo and sister Donatella helped him start his designing house in 1978. Santo is now the President of the House of Versace and Donatella serves as Creative Director. As children, their playground was their mother Franca's dress-making studio, complete with no less than 45 full-time seamstresses. Why fret and worry about what you're going to be when you grow up? Versasce never needed to with a T-square to the Moon in Pisces. Mother and family tradition established an emotional environment in which creativity flourished - and continues to this day. His family was his business and his business was his family. The two never separated. Notice that the Moon, so strongly placed in this chart, rules the eighth house of big business and wealth. Versace's estate is estimated at 807 million dollars, with 130 boutiques worldwide. Also note that the eighth house rules death and sexuality, and it was issues with sexuality that led to Versace's death. Versace's progressed Moon at 24 Capricorn does not shed much light on his demise. Neither, for that matter, do the transits.
Transiting Uranus at 7 Aquarius applies to oppose his Saturn in the eighth. Transiting Jupiter at 20 Aquarius squares his natal Mercury which rules his tenth house of career and his seventh house of "others", or open enemies. Transiting Mars had just passed over a conjunction to his Neptune, which rules his fourth house, or the end of the matter Transiting Saturn made a Yod. Natal Mercury sextiles the Midheaven and transiting Saturn at 20 Aries at Versace's fifth house cusp formed an inconjunct aspect to both Mercury and the Midheaven. The Yod is an aspect that is also known as the "Hand of God," when priorities become rearranged in an eerie, fated manner. . The fifth house is also linked to sexuality as an expression of love. Transiting North Node was exactly conjunct his natal Midheaven.
The only transit listed above that could remotely point to death is the conjunction of transiting Mars to natal Neptune, with Neptune ruling Versace's fourth house. This small window on the subject does not satisfy me, so let's look further.
The pre-natal lunations are eclipses are inserted in every chart I interpret. Versace's pre-natal full Moon was at 16 Taurus, conjunct his sixth house cusp of work and health. His artistic, sensual work certainly placed him in the spotlight. His pre-natal new Moon was at 0 Scorpio conjunct his natal Chiron, which would highlight Versace's potential in to be a respected expert, a notorious free-thinker, and someone who was noted for living outside the mainstream. It could also shed some ambiguity about his sexuality. Such pre-natal lunations would lead one to think that Versace clung fiercely to his own ideas about health, regeneration and learning (remember the libraries). His pre-natal solar eclipse was 0 Sagittarius in his twelfth house. Transiting Pluto made a station on this degree on August 10, 1996. It would be very interesting to know what he was doing on this date, as behind the scenes activities could have had serious consequences later on. Versace's pre-natal lunar eclipse was 6 Cancer, conjunct his eighth house cusp of shared resources, wealth, death and, once again, sexuality. On July 4, 1997, just eleven days before he was murdered on his own doorstep, a new Moon at 12 Cancer conjoined Versace's pre-natal eclipse conjunct his eighth house cusp! Eureka! The Universe highlighted a hidden trigger point in Versace's chart. The dark night of the Moon brought the curtain down for Gianni Versace less than two weeks later. Most unfortunately, the trigger was pulled with deadly results. Never undestimate the power of the Moon. Her lunations and eclipses, pre-natal or otherwise, are never randomly placed.
Ciao, Gianni. Till we meet again.
