Davis is being unfairly attacked. It's a travesty. The Enron-GOP types have now spent something in the 8 million range (money ripped off from consumers mostly) trying to blame THEIR OWN energy ripoffs on Davis.
Yes, Davis was blindsided, caught in a storm with a lose-lose decision to make and made mistakes, but Davis is the VICTIM, whom they intentionally targeted with a very sly and crooked gouging attack, all the Houston energy companies in collusion, including James Baker's Reliant, during the campaign, not only to hurt Gore but to make a cash and power grab against Democrat stronghold California.
Expect the Davis camp to fight back hard now. I saw him on a local talk show the other day and he seemed very reasonable, 2/3 spending cuts and 1/3 tax hikes, and on top of things. The smear campaign of the right struck is as totally inaccurate. Davis is also a moderate and a Vietnam Bronze Star winner. He's pretty mainstream.
If you subtract the 20 billion ripped off by the Houston energy companies from California (which the Bushies have blocked refunds for), the California deficit is the same as Texas's, per capita. And far less than the federal deficit Bush is running up. The difference is Bush can print money, Davis is required by law to balance the budget. By the same logic, we ought to recall Bush. If we could. |
