The "people" believed the administration? Well, sort of, I find invocation of the "people" as some kind of oracular final arbiter the cheesiest of cheesy high school debate tricks, though. The administration had all the strings to pull in the propaganda campaign, legions of bloviating pundits, plenty of captive media, lord knows how many conservative "think tanks" to put a pseudo-academic gloss on it all, plus the all "useful idiot" / "hate America" garbage that's always been so popular around here to throw back at anybody who wouldn't get with the program. The minor inconsistencies between the prewar propaganda campaign and reality in the conventional sense don't count for much against that arsenal.
