the short and long reviews serve different functions. the former are basically like news alerts, designed to cover lots of ground and keep tabs on good new stuff that's out there. the latter are essays, and should be judged by criteria similar to those of articles (interesting? authoritative? important topic? etc.). I liked the Berman review myself, and thought the CIA one was nicely done. And I liked the one on religion, primarily because the FA folks seemed to have done something interesting in that case, going outside a cluster of usual suspects to someone who is actually a serious believer, who proceeded to chide the authors (and by extension much of the FA readership, presumably) for their secularistic biases.... together with the EU piece and the "response" on democratization in Iraq, not a bad "back of the book," all in all... tb@modest.com
