Zionism is a secular, not religious, movement. It happens to be the case that peculiar features of Israel's proportional representation system give inordinate influence to the religious parties, but Zionism itself is still mainly secular, an ingathering of an historic people who happened to survive assimilation due to their religion. Most Israelis are either secular or mildly observant, the equivalent of Conservative or Reformed Jews in this country. Arabs in Israel have full citizenship rights, whether Muslim or Christian, including the right to practice their religion and form their own parties. The idea that Israel is a religious state, despite inordinate entanglement with Orthodox Judaism, is wrong......
