I am involved in a class-action lawsuit with the old US Healthcare,
which was bought by Aetna last year. In early 1995, US Healthcare suffered a
steadily rising medical loss ratio (higher than expected medical claims). When they
admitted it, the stock dropped 20 or 30% and eventually dropped 50%. Peanuts compared to MACR.
I did not think they had much of a case, but the defendants settled. Why? Leornard
Abramhson and all of us shareholders received a fat premium when Aetna bought. In fact, I made
a decent return on the stock. They settled for $22 million four months ago. The difference between
MACR and USHC is that somebody else already owned the company and L.A. was safely ensconsed in the
Forbes 400. So, 22 million was simply go away money for him. Bud, I think, gets to use the company's
resources to defend himself.
