>>what consumers think is what matters<<

Consumers look for features on a cell phone or features of the service, rather than just a brand name. Cingular customers apparently like the savings on unusued minutes per month and don't worry too much about busy signals, dropped calls, lack of service in certain areas, etc. AT&T Wireless customers apparently are satisfied with a primarily voice oriented service that allows some small scale data communications.

My first cell phone was a SONY (the early Sony-Qualcomm model for use on Sprint PCS). The sound was okay, but the service was spotty and the battery life was miserable. My next phone was a Qualcomm thin phone--much better. My current phone is a fairly recent LG model--very good battery life, good voice quality, and even better performance in marginal, low signal areas. The brand name is less important than how well the phone works.
