The brand name is less important than how well the phone works.

The biggest mistake investors here make, imo, is assuming that their predilections are what rules out in the REAL world.

WRONG! WRONG PREMISE! WRONG ASSUMPTION!
JUST PLAIN WRONG!

Most stuff is sold, not bought. That is the real world. So when a store has two cheap phones to peddle, they'll move the ones with the highest margin (for them) - end of story. Nobody gives a chit about what's in the gizzard - NOBODY!

Another reality is that there is little difference between cell provider offerings - they're basically all lousy and most consumers have just accepted this...
