Y2K Urban Legends?

This "fire engine" story keeps making the rounds but the second poster has the right idea. Without specifics on the make and model of the fire engine that supposedly has this problem we have no way of verifying or evaluating "reports" like this.

If real instances like this do exist, the circumvention is obvious: On January 1, 2000 simply tell the machine that it has been maintained to reset its internal counter and get on with life.
