Telcos stopped wild spending on DSL because it proved too costly to install and provision. DSL has it's place but is limited in bandwidth and distance. Even if you are close to a central station the data rates per user are slower than either cable or wireless broadband. And the high operating costs of most telcos kills it. Telcos didn't kill DSL because they have a sinister plan. They already spent their companies into huge debts during the Internet bubble and are now faced with digging out by limiting capital spending and other costs. Call them dumb farts but they are a few billion grey cells short of being manipulating. They don't have the brains to be cunning imo.
