Malawi Says Al Qaeda Suspects in U.S. Custody
Wed June 25, 2003 06:12 AM ET
BLANTYRE, Malawi (Reuters) - Malawi government officials said Wednesday that five suspected members of al Qaeda detained at the weekend were now in U.S. custody and had left the country.
A senior immigration official who said he was with the suspects told Reuters by mobile phone: "I'm not in Malawi at the moment. We are out of the country. They are not in the custody of Malawi, they are in American custody."

State prosecutors say the five men, two from Turkey, one Saudi, one Sudanese and a Kenyan, were arrested in a joint operation with U.S. officials at the weekend, barely two weeks before President Bush visits Africa.

"The men are no longer in the custody of Malawi. They are in the hands of the Americans -- where we do not know," said a spokesman for the Home Affairs (interior) Ministry.

Officials at the U.S. embassy in the capital Lilongwe could not be reached for comment. The embassy has said it was not involved in the weekend operation, the latest attempt to uproot Osama bin Laden's militant al Qaeda network in Africa.

Spokesmen for the police chief and interior ministry told Reuters that Malawi intelligence and immigration officers apprehended the men after they were fingered by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
