No the environmentalists do a fair amount of the research as well. Both have an interest in skewing the figures lower.

About five years ago I was on a plane and while waiting to use the john I got talking to a guy who said he was an automotive industry consultant. I asked him what that meant. He said he did research into what it is that consumers want in a car and then he tells the automakers what it is that consumers want. I had just seen a clip of the Toyota hybrid so I was excited about it. So I said, "So are we all going to be buying hybrids in the next few years?" He looked at me with total disgust and said, "No. People want big cars, SUVs, the bigger the better and they want luxury. They don't want to be rolling down the highway in some little compact car anymore." Needless to say I was appalled....but he was right. Nobody forced those giant things on people, they love them! They just keep getting bigger and bigger. I see Hummers all the time now, clean as a whistle rolling down the highway. SUVs the size of motor homes everywhere I go. Sometimes I'm the only non-SUV in the parking lot.
