It's really sad to see after we invested a decade in building a manageable post-Cold War world order

I agree with you. Worst is that my esteem of fellow men has been shot over the course of the past year. The things they believe. The aggressions they let pass. All quite disappointing.

I see that the EU told Bush to go jump on the GMO issue (maybe calling the Europeans stupid wasn't a great diplomatic tactic).

Not only that. Asking Europe to accept GM foods so Africans would not die of hunger was a particularly pathetic shot. Got logical fallacy?

The problem with these mythical BS "clashes of civilizations" is that they can only end three ways - annihilation, subjugation or coexistence. No major group in the world today is in a position to destroy another; now we know that even the most belligerent actor can't effectively subjugate even a limited portion of another group; so coexistence is the only outcome.

I agree that coexistence will be reached in the long run. But what about the needless suffering in the meanwhile?

Let the jingo-jangling chest thumpers play their games and talk their trash. The rest of the world can rise above that and work on a higher standard.

Good advice.
