>> there is 8-10% electricity loss from point of origin to point of consumption. <<

a little less these days -- more on the order of 6% ...

The pt is that you get back to the problem of why there is not more use of renewables -- mostly it is a problem of cost vs energy density --

Kerry hit the nail on the head -- cost of oil and NG go up enough and these other sources become economic. We are not going to run out of coal and nuclear materials real soon -- problem is clearly oil and transportation -- not electricity.

The problem I see is we aren't doing enough with the resources we are using now -- more efficient use of oil and looking for cleaner ways of using coal -- it is so simple and the payoff so clear that these two are ignored for some holy grail false hope. I've no problem with exploring alternative sources -- we should do that -- but we need to focus on ->fuels<- -- not just the conversion for the next thing. We also need to focus more than half our efforts on smart use of what we have left. We can by no means move away from carbon sources in 30 or even 50 year. The energy density of these sources is too great -- there are things that can be done to lessen the environmental impact and to get more out of the same BTU ...
