There is an old Gaullist dream of a Europe "from the Atlantic to the Urals" that may come true after all in a few more decades. If/when Russia is fully in the fold, there will be no reason to have an alliance with the US except to the extent that it deters Asian powers with long-range missiles from ever menacing Europe (facing the US retaliatory threat through NATO).

NATO is mostly a Europewide non-aggression pact now.
