for instance, what if you borrowed a quintillion yen... a thousand times a thousand trillion... and - for ease of handling - they gave you a single piece of paper (check) for the primcipal. you just put the check in the safe then collect interest checks... which... at a quintillion yen, no matter how miniscule the (negative) interest rate, would probably amount to something... after however many years you just return to them the original, principal check... uncashed...
