McDermott Urging Dems: Time WMD Probe for 2004 Election

When it comes to those elusive weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, congressional Democrats speak publicly in oh-so-grave tones about the urgent need to find out whether President Bush based his decision to go to war on distorted intelligence - or even lied to the nation outright.

But at least one congressional Bush basher has let the cat out of the bag, virtually admitting that any WMD scandal would be more about politics than national security.

Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., is now urging his colleagues to keep their investigative powder dry until the 2004 presidential campaign, when any scandal could be timed for maximum political impact.

"The election is 18 months away," McDermott told The Hill newspaper on Wednesday. "We don’t want this to go away just yet. There’s plenty of time."

Nothing would please McDermott more than evidence that he could spin to vindicate his infamous allegation before the war that Bush would lie to get America to attack Iraq. And, of course, the sorry field of Democratic presidential candidates sorely need all the help they can get.

The only difference between McDermott and his fellow Democrats is that he's impolitic enough to announce the partisan agenda behind any WMD probe out loud.
