They seem content to watch us continue our unilateral approach...we broke it, now we can fix it.

We broke it? So are you claiming that Saddam's regime, and the fact that military forces were required to maintain stability in the region represented a functional Iraq?

What's broke is that we need to fill the power vacuum in Iraq with Iraqis, even if only temporary authorities who can be replaced if discovered to be "undesirable".

What's broke is the US information effort towards pressing the Iraqi people to accept responsibility for their own security rather than playing "get mine while I can" and robbing the countryside.

It needs to be emphasized that Iraq will fall prey to other regional powers, and brutal civil war should the US decide to depart. And to emphasize that they need to be part of the solution...

US forces need to get out of the "policeman" role ASAP, even if local security and power is turned over to folks we don't necessarily approve of. Have some elections for 1-2 year terms, and then back up these elected leaders with our military might and economic assistance. And that same military presence will guarantee that these leaders don't abuse their powers to the extent that they prevent future elections.

WE MUST focus US policy upon making the Iraqi people realize that their country's problems are their own and that the US is only there to assist them in resolving them. We're CANNOT create expectations that we're going to do it for them, or they will resent us when we fail to do so. We must tell them that they have to work together to resolve their problems, or that they will wind replacing one despotic regime for another.

It will be a big mistake if we continue to avoid commencing the electoral process, even if some of the local leaders are not particular "democratic". Make THEM solve the problems of their people rather than assuming responsibility for such solutions ourselves.;
