Kyros, Iraq is an "evolving disaster" only if you expected it to turn into Peoria, smooth sailing, no problems at all. I give the whole Bush administration credit for better sense than that. Toppling a dictatorship like Saddam's was an uncharted course. Really the closest comparison was toppling the Third Reich, and Iraq is a picnic in the park today compared to the aftermath of WWII in Germany. There is no superior wisdom to be found in State, whose advice, now and then, was 'love the dictators you've got' and 'stability above all'.

The difference between now and previous attempts is that now there will be a cease fire in place

For a cease-fire to hold, Palestinian public opinion would have to turn sharply against the violence. Shikaki may say that the Palestinians are starting to turn, but it doesn't sound to me like they are ready to condemn Hamas yet. So I don't believe there will be any cease-fire.
