At the risk of stating the obvious, the effect in each race will be different. There is a lot of support for gay rights in Illinois and the issue will work against the GOP candidate if it is an important part of his or her platform. Overall, it is probably a plus for the GOP nationally on a short-term basis. As you correctly note, it will fire up the right.

I don't think that the issue will hurt Daschle too much. I expect him to be re-elected. I suspect that he has done a good job servicing his state and the people of SD will probably conclude that there is considerable value to having an elected official who serves as the Minority Leader of the Senate.
