Oil Springs a Leak

Money's pouring out of these oils like there is no tomorrow, perhaps because natural gas seems to have peaked, perhaps because the stocks themselves are boring as all get-out.

Should you run toward them? They do represent great value and good dividends, but I think people are fed up with trying to play something that has a completely unpredictable commodity underneath it.

I myself have felt exasperated by these stocks. I bought some BP (BP:NYSE - news - commentary) and Royal Dutch (RD:NYSE - news - commentary) for my Action Alerts PLUS account and battled them for small gains after bountiful dividends. But the headline risks -- OPEC, are we pumping in Iraq or just holding hands, natural gas spikes -- all coalesced to make the group fairly uninvestable in my eyes.

I am holding on to Anadarko Petroleum (APC:NYSE - news - commentary) , which will become more valuable as summer fades to fall. And I am maintaining a small position in BP, because it has natural gas and Russia going for it.

But I see the writing on the wall: This group has "source of funds" written all over it.

Random musings: Looking forward to Arne Alsin being on the show tonight in person. Tune in to "Kudlow & Cramer" to hear the latest from him: Arne's cottoning to Tenet Healthcare (THC:NYSE - news - commentary) here, so maybe the time to bash Tenet has come -- and gone.
